POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man attempted to rob a city taxi driver.

The 40-year-old driver was counting his takings in his black Volkswagen Passat in Drum Woods at about 4.45am on Friday, when he was approached by a man with a dog.

The man gestured towards the money, causing the taxi driver to drive off.

The man, who is described as white, aged between 17 and 20 and about 5ft 8ins tall, was last seen running across Ferniehill Drive into Ferniehill Gardens.

Police said he had pale skin with acne spots and was wearing a black tracksuit.

The man also had a brown dog, similar to a Staffordshire bull terrier, on an extendable lead.

A police spokeswoman said: “Although this man got away with nothing, the taxi driver has been left somewhat shaken.”

It is unclear whether a silver vehicle seen driving away from Moredun Park Road a short time later is connected with the incident.
