A MAN who died after an argument outside a Liverpool church was working as a taxi driver at the time of the incident.

Police launched a murder inquiry after the death of 57-year-old Douglas Bridson, who was involved in the altercation outside the Trinity Methodist Church on West Derby Road in the

early hours of Saturday.

Mr Bridson worked for Botanic Cars, a private hire taxi company, based on Edge Lane, in Fairfield. Officers were called to reports of a disturbance on busy West Derby Road, at around 12.30am, and found Mr Bridson, who police said was from the Breckfield area, injured.

He was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where doctors fought to save his life. However, he died shortly after arrival.

According to Merseyside police, results from a post-mortem later revealed he had died of a heart attack.

A 67-year-old man was arrested at the scene and has been released on police bail pending further inquiries. The family of Mr Bridson has been informed by police, and are said to be being comforted by relatives.

The incident took place close to West Derby Road’s junction with Clifton Road and only yards away from Tuebrook Police Station.

Forensic teams examined the area on Saturday and laid a tarpaulin across the crime scene.

Surrounding roads were temporarily closed during investigations but were later reopened.

Police say they believe there could be numerous witnesses to the attack and are calling on anyone who was in the area or passing through it at the time to come forward.

ANYONE with information should contact St Anne Street CID on 0151 777 4065 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
