SEFTON Primary Care Trust is driving the health message home to taxi drivers throughout the borough.

They are then keeping the meter running by raising awareness of the importance of men’s health to more than 26,000 passengers.

National Men’s Health Week’s theme is men and work ,and Sefton Health Improvement Support Service is showcasing the successful work achieved in making Sefton cabbies healthier and happier.

Jo McCullagh, Sefton Health Pr Specialist, said: “Through ‘Colin the Cabbie’ we are aiming to encourage men to be more health aware. Helping them improve their diet, levels of physical activity as well as accessing health and leisure services will bring many benefits. These benefits include reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and cancer, improving their quality of life and helping reduce health inequalities.”

Sefton PCT specifically chose taxi drivers as it’s a sedentary and solitary job that involves irregular work schedules and minimal contact with colleagues.

This dislocation often results in social isolation and disruptions to home life, and in particular recreational time.

Not only do such factors hinder a driver’s ability to access health and leisure services, lifestyle information, maintain a healthy diet and participate in regular physical activity but they also negatively impact on levels of health and mental well being.
