A taxi driver was forced to make a hurried escape in Luton last Wednesday after he was set upon by three men after dropping off a passanger.

The ambush happened in Fitzwarren Close shortly after 10.30pm, and the victim had a hand-held computer and cash stolen.

He had picked up a woman from Churchfield Road in Houghton Regis, who asked to be taken to Waley's Close in Luton.

But after speaking on the phone to her boyfriend, she directed the driver to Fitzwarren Close instead.

When they got there, she jumped out to get her fare money from a nearby house, and while she was gone three men, one believed to be the woman's boyfriend, approached the taxi.

One grabbed the driver's PDA computer before he dropped a small amount of cash and reversed away.

Det Con Amy Kelly, investigating, has urged anyone with information to get in touch.

The woman passanger is described as black, around 20 years old, 5ft 2ins tall, slim and wearing a pink jacket, and carrying a white shoulder bag.

One of the men is said to be black, about 22 years old, 6ft tall and slim, possibly with a Jamaican accent.

He was accompanied by a white man, aged around 20, 5ft 6ins tall, wearing a grey jacket with a red scarf and carrying a football.

And the fourth suspect is described as white, around 23, 6ft tall and slim, wearing a white jacket.

Anyone with information about the theft should call Det Con Kelly on 01582 394322, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
