Bungee like Bond

THIS bungee jumping Glasgow cabbie is no Pierce Brosnan not by any stretch of the imagination!

But he aims to be the fall guy and raise charity cash while recreating the iconic scene that launched Pierce Brosnan as 007 in GoldenEye in a 728ft plunge down the side of a dam.

Arthur Williamson, 44, will plunge off Switzerland's Verzasca Dam - which was used for the scene in the spy film - in aid of the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund for Sick Children, now planning its 63rd journey to Troon next month.

Every year more than 200 taxis get kitted out for a special journey to the seaside with more than 400 youngsters.

Dad-of-three Arthur has already raised £550 in pledges towards his leap of faith but more generous people will string along to give to the good cause.

Verzasca Dam is the highest bungee jump in the world and is almost 1.5 times the height of Blackpool Tower and nearly twice the height of the London Eye. The jump is a seven-and-a-half second free fall, reaching close to terminal velocity.

At about 120mph, this is the fastest a human body will fall.

Arthur, from Mansewood in the South Side, said: "I wanted to jump off the dam I found that quite exciting, and if I can raise money at the same time, that's even better.

"The last time I bungee jumped was off a crane in Edinburgh 17 years ago.

"There are plenty of options for fundraising, but I thought if you want people to sponsor you, that this might be a bit more exciting. And there's an element of danger.

"I will probably be a bit nervous when I'm up there."

Arthur's pal Stephen Borland will be travelling with him for the jump with a plan to film the action for the Glasgow Taxis' website.

Jim Buchanan, vice-chairman of the organising committee for the taxi run, said he they welcomed all fundraising ideas towards the cause.

He said: "We really appreciate the support Arthur is showing this year as we would for anybody who helps us out.

"We are looking forward to Arthur jumping off. It looks a bit scary better him than me."

Arthur will take the plunge on June 1 and the taxi journey to Troon takes place on June 18.
