It all adds up for taxi drivers
TAXI drivers have given the thumbs up to a decision not to lift restrictions the number of operators in Filey.
Instead, Scarborough Council is to carry out a £15,000 survey to see if there is a need for more taxis.
At present, the council limits the number of taxis operating throughout the borough to 97 with a licence plate costing between £15,000 and £20,000.
A parliamentary act allows councils to restrict the number – but only if they are satisfied there is no significant unmet demand for more taxi services in a particular area.
But the Government has now stated that unless a specific case can be made “it is not in the best interests of consumers to limit the number of taxis”.
And it has asked councils who continue to regulate the numbers to conduct an unmet demand survey to support their stance.
Taxi drivers who attended a meeting of the licensing committee where the issue came under the spotlight said they were “highly delighted” that the council had agreed to carry out the survey.
