A MAN accused of murdering a Sheffield taxi driver told jurors he knows who was responsible for the killing.
Ashley Cohen, aged 25, of Clough Wood View, Oughtibridge, claims he met a man called Barrington Broomfield the day after 53-year-old Younis Khan was shot dead, and claimed Mr Broomfield confessed to committing the murder.

Cohen, who denies any involvement in the shooting, said: "He told me about it and I asked him what has he done? Why has he done that? What's the reason? And things like that."

Cohen admitted involvement in the disposal of the car the prosecution claim was used by the gunman who shot Mr Khan, claiming he asked a friend to move it.

He said Mr Broomfield told him where the Ford Escort had been dumped - near his older brother David's house - so he arranged for it to be moved away fearing it might be linked by police to an earlier incident where his brother's windows were fired at by Mr Khan's son Imran.

Imran and his pals shot at David's windows in revenge for a fight with his younger brother Matthew.

It is that incident the prosecution claim led to David discovering who was to blame and taking revenge.

Ashley Cohen told Sheffield Crown Court he was "scared" about the police coming to that conclusion, which led him to ask David Ashmore to get rid of the car used in the shooting.

Cohen said: "He told me where it was and that it had burnt out and I thought, 'That's another point making the police think I had something to do with it', so I called David Ashmore and asked him if he could move a car"

Cohen also admitted smashing the windows at a restaurant owned by the father of a man involved in the brawl with his younger brother Matthew, which the prosecution claim started a chain of eventswhich led to the murder.

Asked why he never mentioned Mr Broomfield during his police interview Cohen said: "I should have told the police then. If I had spoken to them then I might not be in this position now."

Ashley and David Cohen, 28, of Philadelphia Gardens, Upperthorpe, deny murder.

Ramzan Mirza, 27, of Staniforth Road, Darnall, who is alleged to have been the "spotter" who identified the taxi driver as he drove along Scott Road, Pitsmoor, last March, also denies murder.

Ashley along with David Ashmore, 45, of Dykewood Drive, Wadsley, both deny perverting the course of justice.

The trial continues.
