TAXI drivers are being invited to sign up for a new course to help them improve their customer care skills and their knowledge of the local area.
Doncaster College has joined forces with the council to offer what is believed to be the country's first NVQ in Road Passenger Transport.

Drivers can develop their skills in disability awareness, equal opportunities and knowledge of attractions, events and places to go in Doncaster.

Taxi drivers are often the first contact with Doncaster that visitors have when arriving at the airport or railway station, and are also one of the few door to door forms of transport crucial to many business and disabled customers.

Coun Bill Mordue, cabinet member for neighbourhood, environment and housing, said: "This scheme is an excellent way to provide quality assurance for regular taxi passengers and improve the service for visitors to the borough.

"Drivers taking part in the NVQ course will broaden their local knowledge and customer care skills, helping them to offer an enhanced service to all customers."

Some 25 Hackney and private hire vehicle drivers have already taken part in the pilot project. The 20-week course is delivered in a flexible way to fit in with drivers' other commitments.

Any taxi driver wishing to enrol on the course should contact Susan Morgan on (01302) 553956.
