Taxi driver distraught after fatal collision with woman
THE taxi driver involved in the crash which killed a 22-year-old woman is said to be "devastated" by the tragic accident.
Tony Chance, company director of Ebor Cars, which owned the taxi that collided with the pedestrian in the early hours of Sunday morning, said he did not know who was responsible for the accident, but told The Press the driver was extremely upset.
His words came after police named the young victim as 22-year-old Lucie Kate Brabyn, of Kilburn Road, York.
Mr Chance said: "He is a very responsible driver who has been with the company a long time and I know he is very very upset by what has happened.
"Everybody at the firm is completely devastated." He said the driver stopped immediately after the collision and called straight away for the ambulance and the police.
He said: "He stopped straight away and immediately went to the wounded person and stayed with her until the ambulance arrived.
"I have no idea at the moment how the accident happened, but the police are investigating.
"Our driver gave a full statement to the police and stayed at the scene until the car was taken away by the police for examination.
"We know he is devastated, everybody is, and we want to pass on our deepest sympathies to the family."
Miss Braybn suffered severe head injuries in the collision near the Barbican Centre, shortly before 2am on Sunday.
She was taken to York Hospital, where she later died.
Sergeant Dave Hooper, of York Police, said the collision between the blue Renault taxi and Miss Braybn happened at approximately 1.50am in Fawcett Street, at the junction with Paragon Street, outside Toto's restaurant.
He appealed for any witnesses who saw the accident, or either Miss Brabyn or the taxi, to contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060247.
