Cabbie Murray in a hurry
CAB driver Tony Murray drove himself on to the club history boards when he captured the captain's prize at Woodford on Saturday after chalking up an impressive 45 stableford points in the 18-hole golf competition.
But the 11-handicap Islington player paid a tough penalty - a two-stroke cut in his handicap.
The same reduction will apply in future competitions to the up-and-coming 20-handicap Mike Hennessy, who claimed the runner-up spot just one point behind Murray.
Hennessy, from Highams Park, is currently on song with his golf having won the Vice-President's Trophy in May.
Third place went to 17-handicap Marc Gunby, from South Woodford, who scored 39 points on a glorious Captain's Day when the sun shone and the course was in immaculate condition.
"Almost 70 per cent of the playing members at the club took part in the competition," said Woodford club captain Steve Strum, a 62-year-old Chingford accountant.
The chipping competition was won by Brain Holmes, nearest to the pin on the 173-yard ninth hole was Tony Murray, the longest drive was hit by Michael Everitt, the best front nine holes came from Derek Code, while the best back nine holes were played by Tom Steed.
The ladies' hidden holes prize was won by Helen Leggett, the men's equivalent was won by Roy Webb, with Maureen Hamilton picking up the ladies' prize and Jackie Shafier runner-up.
