Black Day For Celtic

Following your team should not include the risk of injury or death. Unfortunately, it did not work out that way last night for one Celtic fan. Our sympathy goes out to his family and friends

A Celtic fan has died after being knocked down by a taxi ahead of tonight's Champions League game in Milan. The supporter was hit by the car at 11.30pm on Tuesday night as he was crossing the northern Italian city's Via Santa Sofia. He was taken to the Niguarda Hospital, where he died. Thousands of supporters have descended on the city to watch Celtic play AC Milan at the San Siro in the second leg of their Champions League tie. Joanne Yeadon, press officer at the Milan consulate, said: "We can confirm that a British citizen was killed in a road traffic accident at 11.30pm involving a taxi. Next of kin have been informed. My colleagues are dealing with the authorities and offering consular assistance."

Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper reported that the fan was a 37-year-old Scot who had been drunk in the middle of the road when he was run over. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said the fan was a 36-year-old from Glasgow. Police in Milan said he had been trying to cross the road at 11.27pm when a taxi carrying a passenger ran him over. He was taken to hospital suffering from serious head injuries but was pronounced dead at 1am. Former Celtic captain and manager Billy McNeill spoke of his shock at the news. The ex-Celtic captain and mnager said: "This is an absolute tragedy. You've got a guy who's gone over there with his pals for a smashing trip and this happens. I was over there in Milan last time Celtic played there and the behaviour of both sets of fans was impeccable. The fans that go to the away games are a credit, not only to their club, but to their country and for something like this to happen is very rare and very sad."
