A taxi and a car crashed on a narrow bridge known to be an accident blackspot.

Three people were hurt in the head-on collision on Newbridge Road, Billingshurst at 12.30am today.

The driver of the private car had to be cut out of his seat by fire officers because of damage to the front end of the vehicle. He was then taken to St Richard's Hospital in Chichester with serious injuries.

The taxi driver and one female passenger were also taken to hospital with minor injuries. Another male taxi passenger was unhurt.

The road was closed for four hours while police investigated the site. Officers said the rural bridge over a canal was a notorious spot for traffic accidents because it looked narrower than it was.
