A CITY man who was on the run for an attack on a taxi driver when he broke a policeman's jaw during an incident at a supermarket has been jailed indefinitely.
A judge at Warwick Crown Court imposed a sentence of imprisonment for the public protection on violent Michael Domican due to the risk he poses of causing serious harm.
Domican can now only be released when the Parole Board considers it safe to do so, with the judge recommending he should serve at least two years.
The 27-year-old, of Victoria Street, Hillfields, pleaded guilty to charges of inflicting grievous bodily harm on taxi driver Birbal Pathak and inflicting GBH on PC Stephen Reading with intent to prevent his arrest.
The prosecution told the court Mr Pathak, who drives a black cab in the city, took a woman to an address in Black Prince Avenue in September 2003 and he waited outside while she went to fetch the fare.
While he waited Domican walked past and asked to be taken to Bedworth and then back to Coventry for £5 each way. Mr Pathak refused and got out of his cab. Following a verbal confrontation Domican punched Mr Pathak to the forehead, knocking him to the ground. A woman who witnessed the incident said Domican stamped on Mr Pathak's head several times before walking away.
Mr Pathak suffered a broken forearm and injuries to his face. When he was arrested Domican said he had been visiting his cousin in the street but knew nothing of the incident. He was bailed by police, but when police investigations revealed Mr Pathak's blood on Domican's shoes, he failed to answer bail.
Then in April 2006 Domican went to the Asda store in Newtown Road, Nuneaton, at around midnight to buy a shirt after being refused entry to a nightclub in the jumper he was wearing.
After he left a cashier spotted what looked like a glasses case, and gave it to a security officer. When Domican returned to inquire about his lost wallet, he was sent to the store's security office, where PC Reading was dealing with another matter.
But PC Reading had been shown the case, which was found to contain small amounts of cocaine and cannabis. When PC Reading told Domican he had to be arrested, Domican punched him to the jaw, fracturing it. A struggle ensued and Domican escaped.
Domican, who had previous convictions for violence, went to Ireland and was finally arrested when he got off a ferry at Hollyhead on his return.
Lawrence Watts, defending Domican, said Domican was trying to escape from supermarket's security office, and had had no intention of causing anyone harm.
But sentencing Domican, Recorder Adrian Redgrave QC told him: "You pleaded guilty to a gratuitous attack on a taxi driver. It was not just a punch, it was repeated
stamping on his head.
"You then disappeared. Having returned and having committed two minor drug offences, in order to escape, you punched a police officer so hard his jaw was fractured."
